When to Repaint Your Home

How do you know when it’s time to repaint your home’s exterior? Should you repaint simply because the color is fading, or are there other signs to look for? Painters in Tualatin offer the following advice:

1. Although most professional painters recommend repainting your home every seven or eight years, weather can greatly affect how often you need to repaint your house. Is your home bombarded by wind on a regular basis? Does the sun beat down on your dwelling several hours of the day? Do you live in an area susceptible to high humidity or high precipitation? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you may need to have your home repainted more frequently than every seven or eight years.

2. Where your home is located geographically can also factor in on the paint’s longevity. Do you live in an isolated setting high up on a hill? Is your home close to other buildings that protect it from the elements? Solitary dwellings are typically more vulnerable to Mother Nature than those in heavily populated areas.

3. Is there an unattractive, white substance on the exterior of your home that is hard to remove? This “chalking” most often appears on darker paint colors. Its existence is evidence that your paint pigmentation is breaking down.

4. Take a walk around your home’s exterior to carefully inspect for large, comprehensive gaps between the caulking and the substrate. Water seeps into these gaps and causes terrible damage to the underlying material. The more you procrastinate about repainting your house, the more its value and integrity will decrease.

5. Are there sizable areas on the exterior where the paint is peeling or flaking? Untreated, exposed substrate is at the mercy of weather hazards such as water, wind, and humidity. If you want to give your flaking exterior over ten times more protection from the elements, now is the time to repaint your house.

6. Is there rotting wood anywhere on your home’s exterior? Wood rot is indicative of greater destruction to hidden substrates. Left untended, this damage will lead to very costly repairs in time.

If you’re still unsure about whether or not it’s time to repaint your home, contact Painters in Tualatin today for their professional advice. Although you may balk at the expense and inconvenience of repainting your house, doing so now will save you greater grief and much of your hard-earned money in the future.
